demokrasi terpimpin

He was famously quoted to say this about his teacher who failed him,  “Guru model begituan, yang tidak tahan dikritik boleh masuk keranjang sampah. Guru bukan dewa dan selalu benar. Dan murid bukan kerbau”.

I can resonate this statement with a number of situations. Especially where teachers who think they are right all the time and leave no room for constructive arguments/discussions. I can’t recall how many times I was shunned by the teachers for voicing out, disagreeing and at times even just by asking questions. But more on this in a separate post.

Berbalik kepada konsep demokrasi terpimpin. Coming across this concept has brought my memories back to this one time in Bali in September 2014 where I had the chance to befriend a local Balinese surfer. I asked him about the local projects being developed in Jakarta, including the MRT line. Told him that it’s good that Indonesians will soon be able to commute using rapid trains. His short reply was, korupsi semua itu.

Not that his opinion is profoundly mattered, knowing him, doubt that he reads or understands economic needs and nature of a country. But still, its interesting that he thinks of every development projects in Jakarta is corrupted.

Which brings to my next point, nationalism. Where art thou?

Tindak tanduk perjuangan sering berlandaskan semangat cintakan negara, yang well at that time Indonesia and Malaysia were infested with communism.

Namun atas dasar apa?

the hyped-up 2016 movies

2016 will bring an influx of films that are based on the rather usual idea of good vs evil, superheroes vs villains etc. on top of that, the storylines will feature…gasp! what else? More explosions, cities destruction, mean machines, etc etc. Such refreshing ideas.

And when the Hollywood couldn’t think of new superhero ideas, they would then just combined 2 superheroes and make them fight and destroy each other, all in one film! How brilliant!

Thing is, I never was and never will be a fan of those hyped up superhero movies. There’s nothing wrong, though, in those exaggerated out of this world kind of movies..its just that these movies lack originality and meaningful storylines.

Still, there is The Revenant, which will be out in a week’s time. It has Leo in it and its based on true events. I know for sure this will be good.

He’s cute, he rides a bike and most of all, he fights zombies with a crossbow. Mighty fine fella. I don’t mind being stuck in a zombie apocalypse, with him, of course.

I am know, as you might have guessed, on a TWD withdrawal. Currently the Season 4 (best season ever) has ended, and the next season will only be due in October. FML.

I found plenty of them Daryl Dixon memes. Below are my fav ones.

The Actors A List

I have a penchant over watching movies with my fav actors in it. And over times I find that these actresses have consistently choose their roles well and here’s why their on my fav list:

Sandra Bullock – her dazzling performance in Gravity

Rooney Mara – she was the girl with the dragon tattoo

Natalie Portman – Black Swan has always been my fav

Hillary Swank – Read the book, hated it. The only reason of me watching PS I Love You was because of Hillary Swank and boy was I glad cause she was sublime in that movie

Helena Bonham Carter – she’s one good lunatic actress, having partnered with Tim Burton in many of his movies. She and Johnny Depp always a good pair in many of TB’s movies. I liked her best in Fight Club.

Jodie Foster – she rocked Silence of the Lambs

Angelina Jolie – noticed her in Girl, Interrupted and she shone her way through especially in Salt

Marion Cottilard – Inception, inception

Monica Belluci – Irreversible goddess

Carrie Ann moss – The Matrix godlady and of course, Memento

Faye Wong – Chungking Express and her haunting voice in her rendition of Cranberries’ Mung Zung Yan

Maggie Q – she played a cameo in New York, I Love You as a hooker. Very well played.

Turning 29

What have I achieved so far in my 29 years of existence? ha ha this is a joke.

Okay, to commemorate the historic moment of the day that I was born (this post is a week late), I’m quoting some lines from my fav movie and tv series.

“Meet me..in Montouk”
– the final words of Clementine to Joel upon her final memories of them together being erased.

(Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return”

(Moulin Rouge)

“Why can you not stop saying what is in yours? Why must you lead, when I want to lead? If I want to dance, I will ask you to dance. If I want to speak, I will open my mouth and speak. Everyone is forever plaguing me to speak further. Why? What good is it to tell you you are in my every thought from the time I wake? What good can come from my saying I sometimes cannot think clearly, or do my work properly? What gain can rise from my telling you the only time I feel fear as others do, is when I think of you in harm? That is why I am on this porch, Ivy Walker. I fear for your safety above all others.

And yes… I will dance with you on our wedding night.”
– Lucius Hunt to Ivy Walker

(The Village)

“Istriku Ajeng, manusia terkuat yang pernah kukenal.
Terima kasih untuk rumah terindah yang pernah aku tempati.
Terima kasih untuk memberi maaf sebelum aku meminta.
Terima kasih untuk bersabar sampai aku tahu kalau hal-hal terbaik dalam hidup tidak memerlukan uang. Seperti bunyi suaramu yang selalu setia menuntunku, pulang ke hatimu.
Rumahku yang terindah.”

– Letter from Marwan to his wife, Ajeng

“Di tempat seperti ini, kita belajar untuk tidak pernah meminta maaf kepada hidup. Tempat ini terlalu basah untuk ditanam air mata, dan terlalu sempit untuk diisi penyesalan”

(9 Naga)

Coincidentally Rudi Soedjarwo as the director for 9 Naga, is also the director for Ada Apa Dengan Cinta and Mengejar Matahari, my fav indonesian movies.

“Ada teman-teman di masa kecil kita..
ada teman-teman di masa remaja kita..
ada teman-teman di masa tua kita..
ada sahabat-sahabat untuk selamanya..”

(Mengejar Matahari)

“Aku lari ke hutan, kemudian menyanyiku
Aku lari ke pantai, kemudian teriakku
Sepi… Sepi dan sendiri aku benci.
Aku ingin bingar. Aku mau di pasar.

Bosan aku dengan penat,
dan enyah saja kau, pekat!

Seperti berjelaga jika aku sendiri
Pecahkan saja gelasnya biar ramai
Biar mengaduh sampai gaduh

Ahh.. ada malaikat menyulam jaring laba-laba belang
di tembok keraton putih
Kenapa tak goyangkan saja loncengnya?
Biar terderah,
– puisi by Rangga, sung by Cinta

(Gie)

“You can just feel the details. The bits and pieces you never bothered to put into words. And you can feel these extreme moments. Even if you don’t want to. You put these together and you get the feel of a person. Enough to know how much you miss them.

And how much you hate the person who took them away”
– Leonard, on remembering his wife

(Memento)

“This is my destiny — I’m supposed to do this, dammit! Don’t tell me what I can and can’t do!”
— John Locke to the tour guide.

“I’ll see you in another life, brother!”
-Desmond Hume

(Lost)

And oh, while I’m at this, my fav song that’s also the track in episode 17 of season 1

“..And why do you sing Hallelujah
If it means nothing to you
Why do you sing with me at all?”
– Damien Rice, Delicate

Movies and idiot box’s series aside, I am a near 30 girl who have her interests change on an almost daily basis. I am now, as at today, an advanced diver which means that I am a sun worshiper, dreams of living on a secluded island doing nothing but island preservation. I am also a nature & animal lover. Donate money to WWF. Don’t eat / go near to turtle eggs / shark’s fins. I have special interests on North Korea, Indonesia and Scandinavian countries. Somehow believes that North Korea is the least polluted country in the world (since it receives so few tourists over the years) & that I will visit some day. On Scandinavian countries, I had first registered my interest in Sweden after watching The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (and subsequently read the Millenia trilogy). And then Iceland, with the geysers and fjords, ice diving (diving between tectonic plates of Europe and North America & to top it off, the clearest cleanest water on earth with the vis exceeds 120 meters). Ice diving is definitely on the list. The next in line, Indonesia is fascinating to me as even though I’ve been to many parts of this country there are still many more left unexplored. Raja Ampat in Sulawesi, Belitung Island in Sumatera, Derawan Island in Kalimantan, national parks in Java and many other places that are yet to be discovered.

Question is, will I be able to live long enough to travel to all these places?

What Do I Think On KIL Movie

so, I watched a local movie the other day, on its very own opening night. KIL. i went there with zero expectation, more to show my supports towards local movie industry and more so to see what the movie was all about. i am a sucker for any heavy, twisted movies (think the village by shyamalan). and i am a fan of ANY serious malay movie (think bunohan and songlap).

so there i watched KIL. where everybody else on twitterland seems to be applauding and chanting hallelujah to this movie, well, for me i feel quite differently. i give it an average b. the only thing that stood up about KIL was that it is different from other norms and likes of malay movies. not in comparison with bunohan and songlap though, there are in different genres altogether. it has the elements of surprises, drama, melancholic, depressive and a good hint of lovey good feeling, all blend into 2 hours of entertainment.

redza minhat played well as akil. i love that he has a lack of facial expressions, perhaps due to his portrayal of a manic depressive suicidal character. i kinda like the idea of hopelessness that is played in a not overly dramatic way. this time we can see that akil is like any other normal bloke on the street. which is great, cause i hate to spend my money thinking that i could get some entertainment in a form of a movie but instead it’d made me feel depressed afterwards.

cristine stockstill as zara. hmm. remember my old post on hating the manic pixie dream girl? she’s quirky, delusional, confident, smart, vintage-y…to sum they all up, a shitty character that is. can’t they create a character that fits a normal girl?

not much to review on the storyline and plot. like i said, they’re different, has somewhat the hint of surprises towards the ending of the movie, but not totally unpredictable. a lot can be improved, i reckon. one, lose the killer ‘agent’ character with the black suit cause that wouldn’t work under kl heat. that guy isn’t acting for the role in The Matrix, so please, lose it. and his script is absurd. ‘so, awak nak bunuh diri?’. seriously? two, lose the name tag on the front desk girl. she’s not a teacher. third, why is zara so fidgety on the day that the black suit ‘agent’ is supposed to ‘kill’ akil? she knows for the fact that there won’t be any killing done? nervous tak kena tempat. fourth, do something to improve the life action bureau. make it more convincing, mean, evil, cruel. really, anything.

and oh, the best actor for me is the elderly aunt whom her son died and donated his kidneys to zara. she got me teary-eyed.

quoting the director’s statement from an interview that he made with NST, “I wanted to tell a story with a feel like 500 Days Of Summer, a movie that’s depressing but treated in a feel-good way. That was the main aim,”.

Patut la..aku benci gila 500 days of summer.

This, is why I love this movie. I am forever spellbound with this dialog uttered by Lucius Hunt. And this, by far, the best Shyamalan movie that I’ve watched.

Inception

You’re waiting for a train – a train that will take you far away. You know where you hope the train will take you, but you can’t know for sure. But it doesn’t matter. As long as we’re together.”

Kesian dia jadi gila. Finding utopia. Kekeliruan Mal dalam limbo is a produce of the idea that her husband had planted in her mind. Dia commit suicide pun dengan harapan to be together with Dom eternally.

A man who relentlessly pursuing the killer of his wife. A pity that his memory capabilities mirrors Dory in Finding Nemo. And then of course, there is Carrie-Anne Moss.  Notice the striking similarities between Marion Cotillard and Carrie-Anne Moss?
